The 2016 Spartan Race World Championship took place this weekend in Lake Tahoe, California. We have video highlights from the race.
Just got back from a Spartan Race in Pala, California. Brutal heat, unforgiving climbs (starting with a whopper 5-mile mountain climb for warm-ups…), no shade or wind…all around Beast and 12 miles of it!I learned my lesson a year and a half ago racing a Spartan near Vegas. Desert conditions, a mountain climb to start, and I wasn’t nutritioned up enough for the job. The real culprit for me was salt, oddly enough. I blacked out briefly several times. Didn’t feel stable until a few hours post race. And it was only an 8-mile competition.
After a week of floods and rain in Texas, the weather blessedly cleared as The Green Beret Challenge welcomed us to Reveille Peak Ranch in Burnet, TX. You have the option to run solo or as part of 2 or 4 person team. Not knowing the people on my team (due to jumping into an open slot at the last minute) nor having run GBC before I showed up Saturday morning, I was not entirely sure what to expect.
TPK was a multi-stage Adventure Race with elements from Obstacle Races and the Death Race, held about an hour east of Phoenix. Most racers competed in two-person teams (mandatory male/female) but there were individual competitors as well. Tasks ranged from running to rock climbing and rappelling, to heavy rucking, orienteering, balance, grit, strength, and critical thinking. The terrain was a factor as well, the trails had solid elevation change and were pretty rocky.
This weekend the Warrior Race raised its muddy head once again, and the OCR athletes of South Africa came from far and near to meet the challenge of this year’s second Warrior race. Although the Warrior is famous for its muddy obstacles, the weather decided to add a little spice by raining torrentially for 3 days prior to the elite race on Sunday.
Terrain Race Dallas was an excellent race to kick off our OCR racing season after taking the first two months of 2016 off. The race was held at Village Creek Motorcross in Fort Worth, TX and they offer both a 5K and 10K distance with competitive waves in both distances. We chose the 5K race. I was a bit apprehensive about the race being held on a motocross site because I envisioned endless loops on a dirt course up impossibly steep climbs and barreling down the ensuing declines.
Fuego y Agua Nicaragua is just around the corner and once again for 2016 Mud Run Guide has teamed up with Fuego y Agua Endurance (FYA) events to be the official media partner for both the Survival Run and Trail Races. Our team at Mud Run Guide will be working directly with Fuego y Agua staff both on the ground and virtually to bring you up to date information before, during and after the races.
Some of you know me as the Chairman of the Chris Kyle Memorial Run that we hold every year in conjunction with the Spartan Beast in Glen Rose, Tx. The reason we do this at THIS race is that it's held, every year, at Rough Creek Ranch, the same location where Chris and his friend Chad Littlefield were shot and killed in February of 2013 while trying to help a former Marine suffering from severe PTSD.
Spartan Race is all about ripping people out of their comfort zones, testing their boundaries, and focusing a spotlight on any holes in an athlete’s training. Nowhere is this more obvious that in their 12h hurricane heat.
